Pull The Dot® Snap Setter

How do you Install Pull the Dot®?

By using the die designed to fit on a Pres-N-Snap® tool to set pull the dot snaps.

Notice the flat edge on the snap setter die?

The Pull the Dot® snap socket has a lip that fits over the stud base preventing it from lifting off the edge.

This solves the problem of snaps that won’t stay snapped.

TIP - For the price of a snap repair at your local canvas shop, you can be the owner of your own Pres-n-Snap® tool and be a hero on your boat dock.

Why Do Boat Cover Snaps Keep Pulling Loose?

Boat cover snaps can pull loose for several reasons. One of the most common is canvas shrinkage, which puts constant tension on the fasteners and increases the chance of the snap releasing under load.

The angle of the canvas can also create problems. If the canvas is pulling against the snap at the wrong angle, extra pressure is placed on the fastener and can cause standard snaps to unsnap unexpectedly.

Wind direction is another major factor. If wind pressure pushes against the snap from the release side, standard snaps may pull loose while underway or during trailering.

This is one reason Pull-The-DOT® fasteners are commonly used on boat enclosures, dodgers, trailering covers, and other areas where standard snaps may not hold reliably.

Which Direction Does Pull-The-DOT® Release?

When installed correctly, Pull-The-DOT® fasteners release from the side marked with the small dot on the socket.

To unsnap it, lift from the side where the dot is located. If the dot is not visible, pull from the side opposite the direction wind or tension would normally lift the snap.

Because Pull-The-DOT® fasteners are directional snaps, they are designed to resist release from the direction the the wind or pressure is coming from.

Are Pull-The-DOT® Fasteners Stronger Than Regular Snaps?

What makes Pull-The-DOT® fasteners stronger than standard marine snaps is the locking design built into the socket.

Inside the female side of the snap is a small flat ridge that catches under the rim of the male stud. Once engaged, the snap cannot release unless lifted from the correct direction.

This one-way locking action helps keep snaps from pulling loose in high-tension areas where regular snaps may repeatedly fail.

Why Won’t My Pull-The-DOT® Snap Release?

In most cases, the snap is working exactly as designed.

The locking ridge inside the socket is caught under the rim of the stud, preventing the snap from lifting from the wrong side. Try lifting the snap from the opposite direction.

Because Pull-The-DOT® fasteners look very similar to standard boat snaps, many boat owners do not realize they are directional fasteners and try to unsnap them the usual way.

When excessive force is used from the wrong side, it can sometimes tear the snap out of the fabric before the fastener releases.

Are Pull-The-DOT® and Lift-The-DOT® the Same Thing?

No. Although both are directional marine fasteners, they work differently.

Pull-The-DOT® fasteners look very similar to standard boat cover snaps but contain a hidden locking ridge inside the socket that prevents release from the wrong direction.

Lift-The-DOT® fasteners use a completely different design with a post and spring-eyelet locking system that creates a positive mechanical lock.

Where they are similar is in the release method. Both fasteners release by lifting from the side marked with the dot.

What Tool Installs Pull-The-DOT® Fasteners?

Most professional marine canvas shops install Pull-The-DOT® fasteners using a Pres-N-Snap® tool with a special Pull-The-DOT® die.

The die looks similar to a standard snap die but has one small flat area ground into it to accommodate the locking ridge inside the socket.

This can make Pull-The-DOT® fasteners more difficult for DIY installers because standard snap dies will not properly set the socket unless modified.

An installer could grind a flat spot onto a standard die using a bench grinder, but proper alignment is important for correct installation.

Can I Use Standard Studs with Pull-The-DOT® Sockets?

No. Pull-The-DOT® sockets require the correct Pull-The-DOT® studs.

The locking ridge inside the socket must catch under the specially shaped rim of the matching stud in order for the directional locking action to work properly.

Important Note About Pull-The-DOT® Fasteners

Because Pull-The-DOT® fasteners look very similar to standard boat cover snaps, many boat owners do not realize they are directional fasteners.

When someone tries to unsnap them the same way they would a regular snap, the fastener may feel stuck. In many cases, the snap is actually working correctly and simply needs to be released from the proper side.

If excessive force is used from the wrong direction, it is possible to tear the snap out of the fabric before the fastener releases.

When removing a Pull-The-DOT® fastener, look for the side marked with the dot and lift from that side.

Be sure to share this information with others who may be removing your cushions or boat covers to prevent damage.
