Heavy Duty 1” Delrin Quick Release Buckle 300 lb Breaking Strength

If you’re looking for a good, strong quick-release buckle for a boat cover or boat cover tie-down strap, this is the buckle I recommend for most applications.
This heavy-duty 1-inch Delrin side-release buckle has a 300 lb breaking strength and is the buckle we use in our own boat cover tie-down straps.

A Great Choice for Boat Cover Tie-Down Straps

Boat cover tie-down straps use 1-inch webbing, making this a good replacement buckle for many boat cover strap applications.
Boat cover buckles take more abuse than you might think. They’re exposed to sun, weather and repeated tension while holding a cover securely in place.
If the boat is being trailered, the straps and buckles also have to deal with the forces created by wind while traveling down the road.
That’s why I prefer a heavier buckle rather than simply using the least expensive 1-inch quick-release buckle available.
With a 300 lb breaking strength, this is a good balance between strength and ease of use for normal boat cover applications.

Why Delrin?

When shopping for replacement boat cover buckles, Delrin is one of the words I recommend looking for.
The buckle is UV resistant, which is particularly important on a boat where the hardware may spend years exposed to sunlight.
Even good plastic buckles eventually show signs of aging. As your existing buckles get older, inspect them occasionally.
Black plastic that has begun looking milky or faded, a surface that looks porous instead of smooth, or small spider cracks can be signs that the plastic is deteriorating.
Replacing an aging buckle before it breaks is much easier than discovering a failed buckle after your boat cover has already come loose.

Replacing a Broken Boat Cover Buckle?

Here’s something important to know before ordering a replacement.
Don’t count on replacing only the broken half of your existing quick-release buckle.
There are many manufacturers and different molds used to make side-release buckles. Two 1-inch buckles may look almost identical and still not snap together or lock properly.
For that reason, I recommend replacing both the male and female halves of the buckle.
Also check how your existing buckle is attached to the strap. Many boat cover tie-down buckles are sewn onto the webbing on one side, while the other side is adjustable. If yours is sewn in place, replacing the buckle will require sewing.
If your webbing is also faded, frayed or deteriorating, it may make more sense to replace the entire tie-down strap rather than putting a new buckle on old webbing.

When Do You Need Something Heavier?

For normal boat cover tie-down straps, this 300 lb buckle is the one I would choose.
There are some specialized applications where you may need considerably more strength. For example, if a full boat cover is split around a radar arch or bimini top and reconnects at the hem where a drawstring or webbing-ratchet system puts substantial opposing force on the buckle, our 500 lb military-grade quick-release buckle may be the better choice.
For most everyday boat cover straps, however, you don’t need to jump to a buckle that heavy.
